“Holy Shitake! A Wok Star is Born” – the onewoman show starring celebrity chef Katie Chin added three additional shows in Los Angeles to benefit AAPI organizations in celebration of AANHPI (Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander) Heritage Month.

Due to overwhelming demand and in response to the immense support from AAPI communities, “Holy Shitake! A Wok Star is Born”, the acclaimed one-woman show starring Katie Chin, was pleased to announce three additional shows in Los Angeles during the month of May, in celebration of AANHPI Heritage Month. “Holy Shitake! A Wok Star is Born” is among the recent recipients of the Whitefire Theatre’s SOLOFEST 2024 Best Of Fest Award.

Filled with pathos and humor, “Holy Shitake! A Wok Star is Born” – written by Katie, directed by Fran de Leon, and produced by Paul Hemstreet – chronicles chef Katie Chin’s journey as a Chinese American girl growingup in Minneapolis in the 1970s, where she was raised by her remarkable mother; a seamstressturned- groundbreaking restaurateur, Leeann Chin.

“Holy Shitake” is a captivating and thoughtprovoking exploration of identity, culture, and the immigrant experience in America. Through a blend of humor, vulnerability, and raw honesty, Katie Chin takes audiences on a deeply personal journey that resonates with many across generations and cultures. Keep Your Chin Up: Katie Chin’s Biography Celebrity chef Katie Chin is an award-winning cookbook author, caterer, playwright, and culinary ambassador to the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. After growing up working in the kitchens of her late mother Leeann Chin’s award-winning Minneapolis-area restaurants, Katie pursued a career in film and television marketing, but eventually left her executive position to return to her culinary roots.

Katie co-hosted the national PBS cooking series, “Double Happiness”, in conjunction with her mother and together they wrote Everyday Chinese Cooking. On her own, Katie wrote 300 Best Rice Cooker Recipes and the bestsellers Everyday Thai Cooking, Everyday Chinese Cookbook, and Katie Chin’s Global Family Cookbook.

Her numerous appearances on national television include “The Kelly Clarkson Show”, “Live with Kelly & Mark”, “The Today Show”, “Cutthroat Kitchen”, “Beat Bobby Flay”, “Supermarket Stakeout”, “Battle of the Decades”, and as a guest judge on the Food Network’s “Iron Chef America”. In 2013, Katie was a featured chef at the annual Easter Egg Roll at the White House under the Obama administration.

Katie is a long-time champion of DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) and the AANHPI community, and serves as co-chair of Mayor Karen Bass’ AAPI LA Task Force. She also serves on the TEACHAAPI and SheAngels advisory boards, and as the North America cochair for Women’s Entrepreneurship Day. Day.
